Soap Process & Ingredients

In simple terms, soap is made when oils and lye (sodium hydroxide) are combined.  When combined, the ingredients go through a process called saponification.  Different oils require different amounts of lye to turn them into soap.  All of the recipes we use and create have been carefully formulated to create a properly balanced bar of soap.  Some soaps are great for cleaning, some are great for dry or oily skin, and some are just fun and smell good.  But all of them have one thing in common; they all have good ingredients.

This is not an inclusive list, but following are some oils that we use in our soaps, as well as their qualities:

Base Oils/Butters

Avocado Oil - Avocado oil adds conditioning and moisturizing properties to soap and is great for people with sensitive skin.

Castor Oil - Castor oil creates a rich and creamy lather with large bubbles.

Cocoa Butter - Cocoa butter contributes to the hardness of soap, as well as a rich and creamy lather.

Coconut Oil - Coconut oil has a high cleansing ability and also creates later with large bubbles.

Olive Oil -  Olive oil produces a mild soap with small bubbles, which is good for sensitive skin.

Rice Bran Oil - Rice bran oil is packed with antioxidants, essential fatty acids and vitamin e.  This oil adds a rich creamy lather to soap and is used for mature or sensitive skim types.

Shea Butter - Shea butter provides soap with hardness, conditioning, lather and a silky feel.

Sunflower Oil - Sunflower oil is full of essential fatty acids and vitamin E, which condition and moisturize skin.

Tallow, beef - Tallow creates a super-hard, white bar of soap with low, creamy lather that is very moisturizing.
